CCHL This Week

By: Jeff Maguire
The incredibly close race in the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) got even tighter on the weekend and now Smiths Falls Bears are looking over their shoulders at the hard charging Carleton Place Canadians.
Bears’ loss to the suddenly soaring Hawkesbury Hawks last Tuesday allowed Canadians, who defeated Cumberland Grads the same night, to gain ground. A sweep of last place Kemptville 73’s on the weekend moved Carleton Place (20-9-1-0) to 41 points, just two behind arch rival Smiths Falls. Bears were idle Sunday.
After a slow start to the campaign Hawks have improved markedly and are now a factor in one of the best races in memory in the more than 50-year-old CCHL. Hawkesbury scored back-to-back shootout victories over Robinson Division rival Brockville Braves on the weekend. The wins were the fifth and sixth in 10 games for Hawkesbury.
With a pair of shootout defeats to Kanata Stallions during the same period Hawks have now earned 14 points from 10 outings. More important the weekend triumphs allowed them to leapfrog Brockville and take over fourth place in the Robinson Division. Hawks now have 28 points to Braves 27. They also hold a game in hand on their nearest rival.
As for the overall standings in the league, it couldn’t be much tighter!
Nepean Raiders, Ottawa Junior Senators and Pembroke Lumber Kings all won their games Sunday. As a result Raiders and Sens are deadlocked atop the Yzerman Division with 38 points apiece. Lumber Kings are just a point behind while Kanata, who was idle Sunday, is two back of the co-leaders.
A quick check of the overall standings shows there is just a seven-point gap between first place Smiths Falls and seventh place Cornwall Colts. Eighth place Hawkesbury is still well off the pace, trailing Cornwall by eight points and standing 15 behind Bears.
Admittedly the schedule has favoured Carleton Place recently with eight of their last 11 games against teams with losing records.
Canadians’ head coach Jason Clarke however says every point earned in the CCHL is a valuable one this season.
“We won two games on the weekend (against last place Kemptville) we had to win.
“But (Jacob) Tugnutt was incredible in goal for Kemptville on Friday. Both teams played hard,” he says.
Carleton Place emerged with a 3-1 victory.
“This is the best competition in the league that I can remember,” Clarke observes.
He coached Junior Senators for several seasons before moving back to his hometown of Carleton Place to coach the former Carleton Place Legion Kings (now Almonte Thunder) for three successful seasons in Junior B. Included were back-to-back Valley Division titles in 2008 and 2009. That fall (2009) Clarke emerged as head coach, general manager and owner of the expansion Canadians, the most recent addition to the 12-team CCHL.
Now in their fourth campaign Carleton Place is battling for the overall league lead.
“Obviously there is a long way to go. But we have been playing quite well,” Clarke said Monday.
“We’re getting good crowds, especially on the weekend and that is good for us.”
Canadians have improved their previously indifferent home mark to a solid 9-4-1-0. They own the best road record in the CCHL at 11-5 following Sunday’s win in Kemptville. Ottawa and Kanata have both won 10 times away from home.
The Carleton Place bench boss continues to make moves he hopes will strength his team. Last week was a particularly busy one for Clarke the general manager. Gone are goalie Tony Kujava, who started the campaign as the club’s No. 1 puck stopper, along with veteran defenceman Michael Maciag and little used right winger Tony Butcher.
In is net minder Brendan O’Neill, acquired from Kingston Voyageurs of the Ontario Junior Hockey League and right winger Garrett Moore picked up from Bay State Breakers of the Eastern Junior Hockey League based in Rockland, Massachusetts.
O’Neill won both his starts last week and Moore has two points in as many games including a goal in Sunday’s win at Kemptville.
“Obviously we are going to do whatever we can to strengthen our team. It’s going to be a long and difficult second half of the season,” Clarke says.
Hawkesbury GM Ian Henderson has also been tweaking his club in an effort to overcome a surprisingly slow start to the campaign. Monday he said things are starting to come together nicely.
“We’ve made a few small changes and it has definitely helped.
“No one expected the (poor) start we had. But the guys are pulling together. I think we are starting to gel.”
It was a busy week in the CCHL with 16 games played. Four teams, Smiths Falls, Cornwall, Kanata and Gloucester, have reached the halfway mark in their schedules

Sunday summaries
Carleton Place 9 – Kemptville 2:Canadians ran roughshod over the rapidly sinking 73’s in Kemptville Sunday night and in the process closed to within two points of idle Smiths Falls Bears in the overall standings. Carleton Place, who made some key personnel changes last week, totally dominated the last place 73’s outshooting them 40-16 and holding period leads of 4-2 and 7-2. The result gave Canadians a sweep of their weekend series with Kemptville and they have won eight of their last 10 games. Sophomore left winger Stephen Baylis has emerged as one of the top offensive threats for Carleton Place. Sunday he led the way with a hat trick and one assist giving him 21 points in 28 appearances. Amazingly, all three of his goals came while Carleton Place was shorthanded. Third year winger Anthony McVeigh had a goal and three assists while rookie defenceman Kelly Summers, a major addition to Canadians’ line-up this season, scored his sixth goal and set up a pair. Blueliner Larry Smith chipped in with three set-ups while forward Luke Edwards scored once and assisted on another. Both of Kemptville’s tallies came on powerplay opportunities with team scoring leaders Lucas Gonu and Blaine Byron the goal-getters. Justin Laforest only played the first period in goal but he got the win. He was relieved by newcomer Brendan O’Neill for the final 40 minutes. Carleton Place picked up 13 of the game’s 21 penalties.

Nepean 4 – Gloucester 3 (OT):Defenceman Stephan Beauvais triggered his second goal of the season just 59 seconds into overtime to give Raiders a win that kept them tied with Ottawa atop the Yzerman Division standings. The loss at Nepean Sportsplex Sunday afternoon was a heartbreaking one for Rangers, the fifth place side in the Yzerman. They outshot their hosts 43-32 but were stymied by the goaltending of Ryan Mulder who made 40 stops to earn first star honours. Rangers trailed 3-2 going into the third period but team scoring leader Alexandre Boivin triggered his ninth of the campaign with 6:15 remaining in regulation to force the extra period and earn his club one point. Dalen Hedges, the third leading scorer in the CCHL, had the only goal of the opening period. In the middle period Hedges set up newcomer Mitchell Herlihey for a pair of markers, the first goals for the centre who was playing just his ninth game for the club. Patrick White with his ninth and Christian Leger with a shorthanded marker struck for Gloucester in the second period. Dylan BrindAmour made 28 saves but suffered his second consecutive loss since joining Rangers. The visitors were assessed 13 of the game’s 21 penalties but Nepean was only able to take advantage once on nine powerplay opportunities.

Ottawa 3 – Cornwall 2:Junior Senators completed a weekend sweep of Robinson Division Cornwall edging Colts in front of nearly 500 Cornwall fans Sunday afternoon. It was Ottawa’s third win of the week and left them in a first place tie with Nepean in the Yzerman loop. The clubs traded two goals apiece in the opening period. But it was right winger Hunter Racine’s powerplay strike at 14:31 of the second that proved to be the difference. The final frame was scoreless and Sens outshot Colts 31-26. Michael Evelyn and Eric Witzel scored back-to-back in the opening stanza for Ottawa while Michael Pontarelli with his 19th and Trent Durocher replied for Cornwall. With the setback the third place Colts fell five points behind Carleton Place in the Robinson standings. Racine and Witzel each had assists to lead the Ottawa offence. Veteran goalie Charlie Millen made 24 saves to improve his record to 12-6. Jordan Piccolino suffered his second loss in as many nights and saw his record dip to an even 9-9. There were 15 penalties called, eight of those going to the home team. Cornwall defenceman Jason Suvak and Ottawa winger Thierry Gibeault went toe-to-toe late in the second period. Both players were handed fighting majors and the accompanying game misconduct penalties.

Pembroke 6 – Cumberland 3:In an Yzerman Division contest Sunday night the host Lumber Kings had an easy time with last place Cumberland.  They outshot the Navan-based Grads by a 2-1 margin (52-26) and held interval leads of 3-0 and 4-1. As a result of their victory Pembroke stayed one point behind Yzerman co-leaders Nepean and Ottawa. Right winger Timmy Moore, who has found his scoring touch of late, led the winners with two goals. Pembroke scoring leader Ben Dalpe had a goal and one assist while single tallies came off the sticks of Brendan McGuire, Keegan Harper (during a first period powerplay) and Liam Biard. For the fading Grads centre Colin Kruse scored twice while Matt Allan had the other. Andy Munroe improved his record to 11-6 making 23 saves. Overworked Grads’ net minder Devan Tremblay kicked out 46 shots and saw his record slip to 5-13. Cumberland took eight of 12 minor penalties. Moore, Dalpe and Grads’ Kruse were the game stars.

Hawkesbury 5 – Brockville 4 (SO):The suddenly soaring Hawks continued their ascent Sunday night with a hard fought triumph on home ice. Hawkesbury goalie Carmine Guerriero was the hero turning aside 41 shots and totally frustrating the visitors in the process. Braves held a big 45-28 advantage in scoring chances but simply couldn’t beat the veteran Guerriero often enough. Surprisingly Hawks’ goaltender did not figure in the three star selection! It was a tough weekend for Brockville who lost a home and home to Hawkesbury, both in shootouts. With the wins, their fifth and sixth in 10 games, Hawks slipped past Braves and into fourth place in the Robinson Division. Guerriero and Brockville puck stopper Matthew Jenkins both shone during the shootout. The teams sent nine shooters to the line with the home team emerging 2-1 winners and pocketing two big points. Hawkesbury goal scoring leader Pietro Antonelli led the winners with a regulation time hat trick, giving him 11 tallies. Hawks’ top scorer Brandon Bussey netted his eighth goal and added two assists to reach 29 points. Forward Hayden Hulton netted twice for Braves including the tying goal early in the third period. Brockville ace Ben Blasko unleashed his 17th to remain second in the league scoring race with 47 points. Defenceman Zach Todd scored during a third period powerplay. His was among three Braves’ goals in a span of less than two minutes that earned the visitors one point.

Ottawa 6 – Cornwall 5 (SO):Junior Senators moved into the pack atop the Yzerman Division by winning in a shootout against one of the hottest teams in the league, Cornwall Colts. Centre Ryan Collins led the winners with two goals and an assist in Saturday’s contest at Jim Durrell Recreation Complex. Veteran forward Ben Robillard took over the Ottawa scoring lead with a goal and two assists. He also netted the only shootout marker to give his team the bonus point. The triumph left Ottawa (18-9-1-0) with 37 points, the same total as Nepean and Kanata. Sens and Raiders held three games in hand on Kanata however. Ottawa dominated outshooting the visitors 39-23. But Colts got strong net minding from Jordan Piccolino who kept them in the game. Cornwall led 2-0 and 3-2 at the intervals and early in the third period they took a 4-2 lead. Junior Sens counted three times in the final regulation period including a pair of powerplay markers to force overtime. The mandatory five minute period was scoreless but in the shootout Robillard was the only player among eight shooters to find the mark. Shootout goals don’t count in the league statistics however! Winger Greg Jansz fired goal No. 11 and he set up another for Senators. Cornwall scoring leader Roman Ammirato scored twice with singles going to Trent Durocher, Michael Pontarelli and Jake Martin. Colts’ defenceman Kevin Sarrazin was ejected for fighting in the second period.

Friday action
Smiths Falls 3 – Pembroke 1: Bears continue to show they are the team to beat in the CCHL. Friday night they got a 35 save performance from Patrick Martin and a pair of goals from high scoring left winger Yannick Crete on the way to a win over Lumber Kings. The triumph kept Smiths Falls four points ahead of Carleton Place in the Robinson Division and overall standings. Crete moved to 18 goals and an even 40 points good for fourth place on the league chart. Pembroke held CCHL scoring leader Chris Maniccia pointless, but he remained 11 points clear at the top of the parade. The first period was scoreless thanks mainly to Martin who made 18 saves. Bears’ Connor McLaren opened scoring with his 15th early in the second and Kings’ centre Tyler Gaudet, with his seventh, tied it just past the midway mark.  With 4:03 left in the middle stanza Crete scored what proved to be the game winner. He added a shorthanded goal at 12:17 of the third. Defenceman Tyler Akeson, the highest scoring blueliner in the league, set up two giving him 32 points in 30 games. Fourteen of the game’s 22 penalties came during an unfriendly third period. Bears have won all three meetings with Pembroke this season. A large Smiths Falls crowd of 717 took in the action.

Carleton Place 3 – Kemptville 1:Canadians stayed hot on the heels of leaders Smiths Falls, scoring three times in the second period Friday to overcome the strong goaltending of Kemptville’s Jacob Tugnutt. He made 43 saves as Carleton Place dominated territorially, outshooting the last place 73’s 46-22. It was still a much better performance for struggling Kemptville who, 24 hours earlier, succumbed to Cornwall 11-1. But 73’s suffered their eighth setback in 10 games to remain rooted to the bottom of the Robinson and overall standings. Canadians (19-9-1-0) remained four points back of Bears with two games in hand. Carleton Place goal scoring leader Kevin Dufour netted twice giving him 16 and lifting him past teammate Luke Edwards into first place on the team chart with 29 points. Edwards triggered his 12th of the campaign to move to 28 points. Veteran defenceman Elias Ghantous chipped in with two assists. Kemptville rookie Jacob Smith scored his first of the season on a powerplay with nine seconds left in the first to give the visitors the early lead. Dufour equalized on a Carleton Place powerplay at 1:31 of the middle frame and the home team added two more in the period. The third was scoreless. Newly acquired Brendan O’Neill won his second straight game in Canadians’ cage. Forward Stephen Baylis of Carleton Place and Kemptville winger Ben St. Marseille were ejected for fighting early in the final frame.

Nepean 5 – Gloucester 2:Raiders rebounded from their worst defeat in recent memory two nights earlier, downing Yzerman Division rival Gloucester Friday and taking back first place in the division in the process. Line mates Dalen Hedges and Keenan Hodgson led the attack with two goals and two assists apiece. Hedges stayed in third place in league scoring with 43 points. Rangers, who lost their third straight and seventh in 10 starts, led 1-0 after 20 minutes on Stevie Ray Adams eight marker. Hodgson, with his 12th, tied it early in the second and newcomer Brandon Belding, with his first goal and first point for Raiders, gave Raiders the lead. Matt Rosebrook with his 19th goal in 23 games for Gloucester tied it early in the third. But two strikes by Hedges, three minutes and 50 seconds apart, clinched it for the visitors. Hodgson wrapped it up with the game’s only powerplay goal at 15:22 of the third. Raiders held a slight 44-43 shots advantage. Matt Zawadzki bounced back from a miserable Wednesday performance to win his 12th game in goal against eight losses. Veteran net minder Dylan BrindAmour, playing his first game since being acquired by Gloucester, suffered the loss. Rangers were a listless 0-7 on the powerplay.

Kanata 6 – Cumberland 5 (SO):The visiting Stallions moved into a points tie with Nepean atop the Yzerman standings by winning their sixth shootout of the campaign. Grads suffered their seventh straight loss. Even with the single point they remain last in their division and 11th overall in the 12 team CCHL. It was a competitive contest with Kanata holding period leads of 2-1 and 3-2. After Cumberland’s Eric Clitsome tied it just 59 seconds into the third, Stallions struck for two goals and looked to be in the driver’s seat. But just 10 seconds after Devin Fullam made it 5-3 for Kanata it was Grads’ Colin Kruse making it close. Five minutes later Clitsome set up defenceman David Higgs who deposited the tying goal behind Kanata net minder Brayden St-Germain. The five minute overtime was scoreless and in the shootout phase three players from each side went to the line. Brandon Petrie of Stallions was the only goal scorer as the visitors secured the bonus point. Petrie also had a goal and an assist during regulation time with Colin Horton, Braedan Moffatt and Kanata scoring leader Derian Plouffe also beating Cumberland goalie Devan Tremblay. Clitsome had a three point game for Grads with Chris King and Matthew Morin also scoring for the home side. There were just six minor penalties, four of which went to the visitors. Cumberland was 0-4 with the man advantage.

Hawkesbury 2 – Brockville 1 (SO):Hawks continue to demonstrate they are on the comeback trail. After falling behind early they tied the game and then outscored Braves 2-1 in the shootout phase to claim two important points. They moved level with Brockville in the battle for fourth place in the Robinson Division. Each team had 26 points following Friday’s head-to-head clash played in front of 842 Brockville fans. Braves’ centre Griffen Molino had a second period tally. Hawks’ Antonio Roumeliotis netted his ninth with four minutes, 12 seconds remaining to send the contest to extra time. Hawkesbury out shot Brockville 37-29 with Carmine Guerriero, who returned from injury, picking up his eighth win against a dozen setbacks. Matthew Jenkins was the losing puck stopper despite making 35 stops. There were only nine penalties in the contest, five going to Brockville. Braves’ tough guy Ryan Walter (he has 55 penalty minutes and no points in 24 games so far this season) was tossed for fighting along with Hawkesbury defenceman Holden Anderson early in the third period. Jenkins was the game’s first star while his opposite number Guerriero got the nod for third place on the ballot!

Early week games
Cornwall 11 – Kemptville 1:It didn’t take Colts long to grab the spotlight as the team with the most one-sided win in the league this season. Cornwall won by a 10-goal margin over the last place 73’s who are struggling badly. Colts’ ran rampant just 24 hours after Ottawa embarrassed Nepean 8-0. Cornwall led 3-0 and 5-1 at the intermissions Thursday and they poured in six more goals in the third. Right winger Michael Pontarelli and centre Jake Martin each had hat tricks. Pontarelli moved to 36 points, one behind team leader Marly Quince who rang up four assists. For Martin they were his first goals of the campaign. Alexandre Gendron fired a pair and five other Colts had multiple point games in the rout. Kemptville winger Brett Varrin netted his seventh in period two. Cornwall totally dominated outshooting the visitors 55-31. Jordan Piccolino improved his record to 9-7 making 30 saves. Kemptville goalie Billy Cooper withstood the entire onslaught, turning aside 44 shots. His record dipped to 4-13. Not surprisingly tempers flared during the one-sided contest. There were 28 penalties called, 15 going to 73’s. Two players from each side were banished for fighting. Kemptville defenceman Cody Hendsbee picked up two fighting majors and Cornwall’s Trent Durocher was also tossed. Their tussle came at the final whistle meaning both will miss their team’s next games.

Ottawa 8 – Nepean 0:Junior Senators shocked Raiders Wednesday, sending the defending champions to the most one-sided loss in the league this season to date. Charlie Millen, who has been red-hot of late, earned the third shutout in five games for Ottawa. Millen, the son of former NHL goalie Greg Millen, rang up all three. The 19-year-old Peterborough native made 30 saves to silence the usually potent Nepean offence. Raiders’ veteran net minder Matt Zawadzki started but was lifted early in the third period after the fifth Sens’ goal. He faced 31 shots. His replacement Ryan Mulder quickly yielded three more goals in a span of just less than six minutes. Ottawa led 1-0 and 3-0 at the intervals before putting it away with five in the third period. The offence was shared with eight different players scoring. Ryan Collins, Marc Shanks and Michael Evelyn had a goal and one assist each. Light scoring Joey Champigny and Luc Deschamps contributed three assists apiece. Champigny and Raiders’ centre Keenan Hodgson were banished for fighting early in the third. There were 11 penalties in total, seven going to visiting Nepean. Hunter Racine had the only powerplay goal early in the final frame. Less than 100 people were in the stands to watch the one-sided affair, sparring Raiders’ blushes. The result left three teams, including Sens and Raiders, a single point behind first place Pembroke in the division.

Hawkesbury 4 – Smiths Falls 3: After a listless start to the campaign the improving Hawks are slowly but surely crawling out of the deep nest they created for themselves. It was a Tuesday night in which all three Robinson Division teams within range of leaders Smiths Falls won. For Hawkesbury it was their fifth win in 10 games, but four of those triumphs have come against the league elite. This time Bears were the victims, falling at home for only the fourth time in 16 outings. A powerplay goal by defenceman Holden Anderson at 13:01 of the third period broke a 3-3 deadlock and propelled Hawkesbury to a vital victory. Anderson also assisted on Carl Faucher’s first period powerplay strike giving him 20 points in 25 appearances. Goalie Brock Crossthwaite played a big role in Hawks’ win, kicking out 33 shots as the home team led the shots parade 36-29. Three third period counters were the difference for Hawkesbury with Stefano Momesso and Antonios Roumeliotis their other goal scorers. Little used winger Brett Costello had his first goal for Smiths Falls and one assists, as did defenceman Patrick Sexton. The goal was Costello’s first in a Smiths Falls’ uniform. Yannick Crete fired his 16th for Bears while league scoring leader Chris Maniccia was held to one assist. Jimmy Howe was the losing net minder. Hawks were assessed seven of the game’s 12 penalties. Hawkesbury had two powerplay strikes while Bears were an anemic 0-6 with the man advantage.

Carleton Place 7 – Cumberland 3:A strange quirk in the CCHL schedule saw Canadians and Grads finish their five game season series on Nov. 20, before the season is half over. Carleton Place won all five games including four victories over Cumberland in their last nine games. The win, combined with Smiths Falls’ home ice loss to Hawkesbury, moved Carleton Place within four points of the league leaders. They held two games in hand on Bears after play Tuesday. Devan Tremblay kept the home team at bay for two periods and as a result of his strong play Grads nursed a 2-1 lead into the third. Canadians then exploded for six goals, peppering Tremblay with 18 shots in the period. The Edwards brothers had a big night. Luke triggered a hat trick, including a pair of powerplay tallies and added one assist. Older brother and line mate Brock netted once and set up four. Alex Frere, veteran forward Luke Martin and defenceman Kelly Summers on a late game powerplay were the other scorers for Carleton Place. Matt Allan and Travis Douglas gave Grads the early advantage with Chris King scoring the only third period goal for Cumberland. Canadians were an efficient three for four on the powerplay. Newcomer Brendan O’Neill made his first start in the Carleton Place cage a winning one. He stopped 23 shots. Canadians out chanced the visitors by a huge 47-26 margin.

Cornwall 5 – Kanata 3: The improving Colts won their third in a row to stay in the race for first place in what is now a highly competitive Robinson Division. Stallions dropped two important points in their battle to stay with the leaders in a tight tussle in the Yzerman loop. Stallions’ four division rivals all hold games in hand. In fact Nepean and Ottawa had played four fewer games than Kanata following play Tuesday while leaders Pembroke held two in hand. Cornwall scoring leaders Marly Quince and Michael Pontarelli each netted twice and set up another to lead the offence. Quince moved into second place in the CCHL in goals with 21. The visitors out shot Kanata 35-24 with Brandon Howes adding an insurance goal for Cornwall just past the midway mark of period three. Stallions got a goal in each period with defenceman and team captain Curtis Watson firing a pair, including one during a powerplay early in the third that temporarily made it a 4-3 game. Watson moved to six goals and 22 points in 30 games. Fabian Walsh had the other Kanata marker. Jordan Piccolino was the winning goalie making 21 stops while veteran Brandon Lane suffered the loss. There were just five minor penalties called in the fast game which took only an hour, 55 minutes to play. Three of the infractions went to the visitors and each side had one powerplay tally.
A total of 14 games are scheduled in the league this week from Tuesday to Sunday. There will be five games each Friday night and Sunday.

NOJHL This Week

NOJHL COMMUNICATIONS
MEDIA RELEASE

Thunderbirds and Trappers proving fewer goals-against means overall success
SUDBURY -- It’s pretty much a given that keeping the puck out of your net means you’ll undoubtedly win your fair share of games with the top teams in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League standings proving that fact.
The NOJHL-leading Soo Thunderbirds have allowed the fewest goals-against of any club in the league at 51 while the second place North Bay Trappers sit No. 2 overall with only 54 goals given up so far this season.
For the defending NOJHL and Dudley-Hewitt Cup champion Thunderbirds their goals-against total is the fifth lowest total of any club in the entire 128-team Canadian Junior Hockey League.
As for the Trappers they currently sit tied for seventh-best in least markers allowed at 54.
Only 16 squads across the CJHL have let in fewer than 60 tallies at this point in the season.
Off those clubs, including Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay, 11 of them are presently either in first or second place overall in their respective leagues.
Goals-against per game percentage wise sees the T-Birds ninth in the CJHL at 2.43 while the Trappers come in at 12th overall nationally.
The Minnesota Wilderness of the Superior International Junior Hockey League has allowed the fewest goals so far at 34 in 22 games for a 1.55 average.

WEEK 11: Week 11 in the NOJHL features six games on the slate with action getting underway tonight as the Sudbury Nickel Barons host the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in a 7:30 p.m. start at McClelland Arena in Copper Cliff.
Three tilts are scheduled for Friday including Sudbury visiting North Bay’s Memorial Gardens for a 7 p.m. face-off with the hometown Trappers.
That night’s other match-ups features the Gold Miners at home to the Beavers of Blind River and the Elliot Lake Bobcats looking to extend a season-high winning streak to three games as they host the Soo Thunderbirds at Centennial Arena. Both of those contests get underway at 7:30 p.m.
Week 11 concludes Saturday on two fronts as Blind River heads to Iroquois Falls to meet the Abitibi Eskimos while Kirkland Lake entertains North Bay. Puck drop in each of those games will be 7:30 p.m.
SHOUT OUT FOR SHUTOUTS: Two more shutouts were posted in the NOJHL this past week raising the total number of blankings so far this season to six.
Soo Thunderbirds rookie netminder Steven Dombrowski leads the league with two, including a 39-save performance Saturday in a 4-0 road victory vs. Abitibi.
North Bay puck stopper Dustin Hummel registered his first career shutout in the league Sunday kicking out all 38 attempts he faced in a 2-0 triumph over the Thunderbirds.
Off the six shutouts so far, all of them have been posted by the top three clubs in the NOJHL standings with the Soo picking up three, North Bay two and Kirkland Lake the other.
Joel Horodziejczyk (Soo), Greg Dodds (North Bay) and Chris Komma (Kirkland Lake) have accounted for those additional whitewashings.
FIVE-GAMER: A pair of NOJHLers in Sudbury’s Sebastien Leroux and Kirkland Lake’s Jordan Briand have five-game point streaks on the go.
Leroux, a 20-year-old Chelmsford product, who is currently fourth in league offensive production, has 10 points during his run on five goals and as many assists.
As for Briand, the Gold Miners forward who hails from Val d’Or, Que., he has seven points in that span, including a pair of tallies.
2013 DUDLEY-HEWITT CUP: The North Bay Trappers will serve as the host team for the 2013 Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canada Jr. A championship tournament.
The five-day event will be held at North Bay Memorial Gardens April 30 through May 4. It will feature the Trappers along with the champions of the NOJHL, Ontario Junior Hockey League and Superior International Junior Hockey League taking part.
Should North Bay go on to capture the NOJHL championship, then the league finalist will round out the four-team field with a berth to the Royal Bank Cup national Jr. A championship in Summerside, P.E.I. in May on the line.

The Minnesota Wilderness look to be early favourites to capture a third straight SIJHL title and return to the Dudley-Hewitt Cup as they league-best 19-3 record.
Another U.S. based side in the Buffalo Jr. Sabres currently top the OJHL standings with 42 points as they are presently seven points clear of both the Trenton Golden Hawks and Georgetown Raiders who are tied for second overall.
NOJHL THREE STARS: The importance of solid goaltending was evident again last week, as one of the league’s busiest young puckstoppers grabs top spot in this latest installment of the NOJHL Three Stars of the Week for the time frame concluding Nov.18.
CORY SIMIC – ELLIOT LAKE BOBCATS: For 18-year-old Whitby native Cory Simic, he likely arrived in Elliot Lake in the fall, knowing full well he would face a lot of pucks this year.
The young netminder has played a large part in a recent resurgence within the team, turning aside 86 of 93 shots that he faced last week as the Bobcats picked up back to back wins.
Pulling to win both striking distance of Abitibi and Blind River, Elliot Lake is sure to lean heavily on the services of Simic, who trails only Chris Komma (Kirkland Lake) and Greg Dodds (North Bay) in minutes played among NOJHL goaltenders.
SAMUEL WILBUR – BLIND RIVER BEAVERS: If the Blind River team defense can catch up to the club’s offensive acumen, the Beavers might be in line for a move up the standings.
The mill town boys scored nine goals in a pair of games last week, though allowing an even dozen spelled a pair of defeats for coach Doug McEwen and his crew.
Still, Saginaw native Samuel Wilbur now finds himself among the league top ten scorers after racking up a goal and five helpers last week.

CCHL This Week

By JEFF MAGUIRE
As the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) season nears the halfway mark there is no doubt that one of the early surprises in the Tier 1 Junior A season to date is the play of Kanata Stallions.
Last April Kanata hosted the Fred Page Cup Eastern Canadian championship. They gave a very credible performance, winning two of three round-robin games before falling to CCHL champion Nepean Raiders in the semi-final game. Raiders were edged 3-2 by Woodstock (New Brunswick) Slammers of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League in the tournament final.
Stallions went into the event as the only team in tournament history who had failed to qualify for their own league playoffs. In fact Stallions have missed the CCHL post season three of the past four campaigns.
This season, with former National Hockey League defenceman Corey Foster back behind the bench, Kanata is challenging for the overall lead in the 12-team league. Last week they won a pair of 2-1 decisions on home ice to improve their record to 17-11-1-0.
Stallions were idle Sunday. On Monday morning they were tied with Nepean Raiders for second place in the very tight Yzerman Division with 35 points, just one behind Pembroke Lumber Kings. Pembroke doubled Nepean 4-2 Sunday to take over top spot in the six-team division. Lumber Kings hold one game in hand on Kanata while Nepean has three in hand.
Smiths Falls Bears, who defeated last place Kemptville 73’s 4-1 on Sunday, lead the Robinson Division and overall league standings with an impressive 20-8-0-1 mark and 41 points. Carleton Place Canadians, who blanked Hawkesbury Hawks 2-0 Sunday afternoon, are second in the Robinson standings. They too have 35 points to date.
The overall CCHL standings are so tight that there is just a 10 point gap between first place Smiths Falls and seventh place Cornwall Colts. Cornwall also won Sunday, doubling Cumberland Grads 6-3.
Foster, who took the head coaching reins in Kanata partway through last season following Randy Pierce’s dismissal, is confident his team can stay in the thick of the race.
“We’ve got a good group of kids. Everyone in the room gets along really well,” Foster said Monday.
“This (halfway point) is where the season gets tough. The guys will have to commit completely, compete hard in every game and work hard in practice.
“I think this group is willing to do what it takes.”
Solid goaltending
Stallions have been getting steady goaltending with veteran Brandon Lane turning in some outstanding efforts. The 20-year-old Lane leads the league in appearances with 25 and he currently sports a 13-9 mark and one shutout.
Back-up puck stopper Brayden St-Germain has been a big addition. The 16-year-old is being groomed as Lane’s replacement and he has not disappointed so far. The Stittsville native has appeared in 10 games and has a 4-3 mark. Monday he stood 10th among CCHL net minders in goals against average with a solid 2.80 mark.
On offence veteran centre Derian Plouffe leads the club with 17 goals and 17 assists. He was tied for fifth on the league scoring chart Monday.
Second year left winger Brandon Petrie has accumulated 27 points including 17 set-ups while centre Fabian Walsh is third with 26 points. Defenceman and team captain Curtis Watson is a strong fourth on the Kanata scoring chart with 20 points including 16 assists in 29 appearances. Watson, a 20-year-old from Braeside near Arnprior, is in his fifth season with Stallions.
“We’ve got some guys back from last year who are playing well. But I am very impressed with some of our new additions,” Foster observes.
“We’ve played more games than most of the teams in the league. But that is going to change very quickly now. So every win is important.
“The whole league is so tight this year. Every game is huge,” the head coach adds.
“The parity is really good for the league.”
Next up for Stallions is a home ice engagement with Cornwall Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Kanata Recreation Complex. Friday night they visit Cumberland Grads, the last place side in the Yzerman Division. The face-off in Navan will be at a somewhat earlier than usual 6:30.

Sunday summaries
Smiths Falls 4 – Kemptville 1: After slipping up in Kemptville in their previous meeting Oct. 28 (73’s won 1-0) the visiting Bears came out on the winning end this time around, although the home team gave them all they could handle. The 73’s held a 32-27 shots advantage but Jimmy Howe made 31 saves to help the league leaders to their third win in four games. Bears handed Kemptville a lifeline, taking 10 of the game’s 16 penalties. But 73’s were only able to cash in once on 10 opportunities. The first period was scoreless but CCHL scoring leader Chris Maniccia connected for his league best 23rd goal midway through the second to give high flying Smiths Falls the lead. Right winger Ryan Eardley made it 2-0 Bears early in the final frame. Jesse Lussier pulled Kemptville close during a powerplay at the 11:13 mark. Back-to-back strikes by Yannick Crete five minutes, 41 seconds apart sealed it for Smiths Falls. Crete’s second goal and 15th of the campaign was into the empty Kemptville cage with 1:09 left. Crete is in fourth place in the league scoring derby. Line mate Maniccia picked up assists on both of his tallies. Howe was named the game’s first star. Kemptville’s Billy Cooper was the losing goalie, turning aside 23 shots.

Pembroke 4 – Nepean 2: Sunday’s best match-up saw Lumber Kings win a four-pointer against Raiders to take over first place in the Yzerman Division. The loss prevented Nepean from remaining on top and extending their lead over Pembroke. The home team dominated, outshooting Raiders 34-24 and holding period leads of 2-0 and 3-1. But Ryan Mulder kept Nepean in the game making 30 saves and left winger Steven Johnston’s 11th goal at 8:29 of the third set up a frantic finish. Winning goalie Darren Smith kept the door shut the rest of the way and Tyler Gaudet’s second goal of the game, into the empty Raiders’ goal with 14 seconds remaining, clinched two important points for Pembroke. Kings’ goal scoring leader Stephen Hrehoriak opened scoring with his 13th of the campaign and Colin Bradbury had the other first period goal for the winners. Winger Timmy Moore had a pair of assists for Pembroke. Brandon Watt netted the first Nepean marker in the second period. Both sides were 0-4 on the powerplay.

Carleton Place 2 – Hawkesbury 0: Two third period goals, the last into the empty net, gave Canadians a hard fought win over the improving Hawks Sunday afternoon in front of more than 400 home fans. Almonte native Justin Laforest made 23 stops to record his first shutout of the campaign. The triumph gave Carleton Place (17-9-1-0) a split of their weekend home and home series with Robinson Division rival Hawkesbury. The second place Canadians outshot the fifth place Hawks 33-23. But the game was scoreless for 43 minutes and 42 seconds until Alex Globke unleashed his 13th goal to win it. Right winger Luke Kasteel’s sixth of the campaign came with just one second remaining and veteran Hawkesbury goalie Brock Crossthwaite on the bench in favour of a sixth attacker. It was only the second ‘0’ of the campaign for Carleton Place who has yet to be blanked themselves this season. Hawkesbury was assessed seven of the 13 penalties called during the contest. Laforest, Globke and Crossthwaite were the game stars!

Cornwall 6 – Cumberland 3: Colts won their second of the weekend, doubling sliding Cumberland at Navan Memorial Centre and Arena Sunday afternoon. Cornwall remained third in the Robinson loop, four points behind Carleton Place. Grads, the last place side in the Yzerman Division, lost for the fifth straight time. It was their eighth setback in 10 outings. The home team was in it early. The teams were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes and defenceman David Bennett’s powerplay tally gave the hosts the lead early in period two. Cornwall then scored five in a row, two in the second and three more in the third period to take charge of the engagement. Centre Marly Quince scored his team leading 19th goal and added an assist while blueliner Brandon Howes also had a goal and one helper. Newcomer Lawson MacDougall scored his first goal in only his second appearance for Cornwall while defenceman Pierre Ouellette also netted his initial marker of the campaign. Carl Belizario and Mitch Zion had the others for Colts. Defenceman David Higgs and centre Matthew Morin with a shorthanded effort late in the third also replied for Cumberland who was outshot 41-32. James Edwardson was the winning net minder while Reilly Turner suffered the loss. Grads were handed nine of the game’s 17 minor penalties but they didn’t surrender a powerplay goal.

Brockville 5 – Gloucester 4: Braves completed a 2-0 weekend, edging Matt Rosebrook and Gloucester. Rosebrook, who is undoubtedly the trade acquisition of the season to date in the CCHL, scored four straight goals for Rangers who had trailed 4-0 just over 13 minutes into Sunday’s game at Earl Armstrong Arena in Orleans. The 19-year-old Carp native now has 18 goals and 26 points in 22 games since moving to Gloucester as part of a four player trade with Kemptville in late September. Rosebrook leads Rangers in goals and is just four points behind team scoring ace Alexandre Boivin (he had two assists Sunday). Left winger Erik Brown of Braves spoiled the Rosebrook-led comeback bid, netting his fifth of the campaign at 6:41 of the final frame. David Ferreira, Braves’ scoring leader Ben Blasko, Zach Todd and Chris Roll, each with powerplay tallies, gave the visitors their early lead. Matthew Jenkins made 31 saves for the net minding triumph. Gloucester led the shots parade 35-31. Blasko, the second leading scorer in the CCHL (he has 45 points) and Ferreira each had three point games. Gianmarco De Meis started in goal for Gloucester but was relieved by Gunner Rivers after giving up three goals on just six shots. Each team was assessed eight penalties with Rangers going three for seven on the powerplay while Braves were two for five.

Lower lights win
All 12 teams saw action Friday and three of the league’s lesser lights scored important wins over higher standing opponents. League-leading Smiths Falls also fell to defending champion Nepean in a hard fought encounter.

Nepean 2 – Smiths Falls 1: Playing at home Bears ran into a hot goalie in the person of Nepean veteran Matt Zawadzki. He blocked 39 shots as Raiders surged into the lead (on percentage points) in the Yzerman Division. At the end of play Friday they were tied in points with Kanata and Raiders were one ahead of Pembroke and two up on Ottawa. This was a defensive contest with all three goals scored in the opening period. Smiths Falls' goalie Patrick Martin, who has been hot of late, was pulled after giving up back-to-back markers by Kenneth Neil and Nepean scoring leader Dalen Hedges six and a half minutes apart. Neil set up what proved to be the winning goal by Hedges. Late in the period right winger Connor McLaren netted his 14th of the campaign to make it close. The goaltenders stole the spotlight in the final 40 minutes. Zawadzki, who was named the game’s first star, stopped 28 shots including 16 in the middle stanza. At the other end Martin’s replacement, Jimmy Howe, kicked out 22 shots to keep Raiders from adding to their advantage. There were just seven minor penalties called, four of those going to Nepean and there were no powerplay goals. A good Smiths Falls crowd of just less than 800 took in the action.

Brockville 4 – Pembroke 2: Braves surprised the visiting Lumber Kings, breaking out after a slide that had seen them drop eight of their previous 10 starts. Brockville still has a major climb ahead in the Robinson Division. But they improved their home record to 8-6. They needed an empty netter to clinch the two points however. The loss was just the third for Pembroke in 10 games. The visitors led 2-1 going into the third period. Braves triggered three unanswered in the final frame including back-to-back powerplay strikes by centre David Ferreira. He took over the team goal scoring lead with 16. Brockville might have added another goal in the period but Cory Wilson’s penalty shot was stopped by Kings’ net minder Andy Munroe who sported the CCHL’s second best goals against average following action Friday. Braves were an impressive three for four on the powerplay with scoring leader Ben Blasko also scoring during a man advantage situation. Team captain Chris Roll found the empty net with just 22 seconds remaining to wrap it up. Pembroke got a goal and an assist from Emilio Audi who moved to 22 points. Defenceman Charlie Connell fired his third of the season late in the opening frame. Each team picked up five minor penalties but Lumber Kings were 0-4 on the powerplay. Nearly 900 witnessed the game at venerable Brockville Memorial Centre.

Kanata 2 – Ottawa 1: Stallions got another excellent net minding performance from Brandon Lane as they won a squeaker over Yzerman rival Ottawa at Kanata Recreation Complex. Lane made 30 saves as the visitors held a 31-24 edge in scoring chances. Brandon Petrie’s 10th goal at 7:54 of the third was the winner. The contest marked the second straight 2-1 decision on home ice for Kanata who has been the surprise team in the CCHL so far this season. Stallions and Gloucester have played the most games in the division to date (29) but Kanata’s 17-11-1-0 record has them among the league leaders as the campaign nears the halfway pole. Stallions’ winger Alex Stothart opened scoring just past the midway mark of the first. Junior Senators’ scoring leader Ben Robillard replied with his 13th early in the middle stanza. Alexandre Savard-Belanger was the losing goalie making 22 saves. The setback was the second of the week for Ottawa but they remain in the thick of the battle for the division pennant. Kanata was assessed seven of the game’s 12 minor penalties. All three goals were even strength strikes. A good Kanata crowd of more than 300 watched the well played contest.

Hawkesbury 3 – Carleton Place 2: Canadians, the second place side in the Robinson Division, failed to take advantage of their opportunity to gain ground on leaders Smiths Falls. They were edged by the improving Hawks who have been a thorn in their side in recent times. Hawkesbury won their second in three starts against Carleton Place, both at home. Last March the fifth place Hawks surprised the fourth place Canadians in the opening round of playoffs, sweeping Carleton Place four straight. Canadians became the latest victim of Hawks’ strong Friday night home performances this season. Hawkesbury has won seven of nine home games on Friday nights this season. The first was scoreless but two Hawks’ goals in less than three minutes meant the end of the line for Carleton Place starting goalie Tony Kujava. His replacement Justin Laforest yielded Brandon Bussey’s powerplay goal just two minutes, 11 seconds after taking over. Despite blocking 13 shots the rest of the way Laforest was the hard luck loser. Carl Faucher and defenceman Holden Anderson had the earlier goals for Hawkesbury. Anderson also set up one while winger Antonio Roumeliotis earned two assists. Stephen Baylis triggered a shorthanded, unassisted goal late in the second. Winning goalie Brock Crossthwaite also yielded a third period powerplay goal by Carleton Place newcomer Jide Idowu. The defenceman from Florida netted in his first appearance for Canadians. It was a chippy game with 21 penalties called, 12 of those going to Carleton Place.

Cornwall 5 – Gloucester 3: Colts emerged from a brief two game dip to get back into the thick of the Robinson Division race. Friday’s win at Earl Armstrong Arena in Orleans evened Cornwall’s record against Rangers at two wins apiece. The visitors led 3-1 and 4-1 at the intervals and they grabbed a four goal lead with 6:32 remaining and then withstood a late Gloucester charge that produced two goals in a span of 2:59. Second year centre Marly Quince took over the Cornwall scoring lead with two goals, giving him a team high 18. He also set up left winger Alexandre Gendron’s fifth goal which made it 3-1 in the first period. Winger Michael Pontarelli led the winners with his 12th goal and three assists. Veteran forward Mitch Zion had the other goal for Cornwall and he also helped out on one. Gloucester captain and scoring leader Alexandre Boivin reached the 30 point plateau with his eighth goal and one assist. Teammate Chad Millett also had a goal and one helper with Patrick White scoring shorthanded in the third period. Colts out chanced Rangers 36-27 with James Edwardson the winning goalie and Gunner Rivers suffering the loss. Each side picked up 10 penalties and both had a powerplay tally. A pair of late game tussles saw two players from each side tossed for fighting. All four will miss their team’s next game.

Kemptville 6 – Cumberland 3: The 73’s emerged from a lengthy slump which had seen them take just three points from 10 games, doubling Grads in front of 238 Kemptville fans. The battle of last place teams saw Kemptville move within seven points of fifth place Hawkesbury in the Robinson Division. The Navan-based Grads continued to trail Gloucester by six points in the Yzerman loop. Three unanswered strikes in less than six minutes in the first period set Kemptville on course for just their sixth victory in 25 games. Centre Joey House erupted for a hat trick giving him seven goals. Blaine Byron and Jake Butler had a goal and one assist each while team scoring leader Lucas Gonu fired No. 16. Brett Varrin, Mason Nowak and Jesse Lussier added two assists apiece to the Kemptville attack. Cumberland veteran Zach Rodier tallied twice while Matt Allan scored once and helped set up both of Rodier’s tallies. Jacob Tugnutt, son of former National Hockey League goalie Ron Tugnutt, earned his first net minding win in three decisions, making 33 saves. Cumberland out chanced the home team 36-32 with Devan Tremblay the losing goalie. There were just eight minor penalties in the well played contest, five of them going to Grads. Byron’s opening goal came during the game’s first powerplay. House, a four season CCHL veteran, was an easy choice as the first star!

Early week games
Smiths Falls 5 – Cornwall 1: The league leaders continue to get outstanding goaltending and their forwards, especially centre Chris Maniccia, are providing plenty of offence. It was the same story in Cornwall Thursday. The teams were even in shots at 38 apiece. But veteran puck stopper Patrick Martin allowed only one goal on the way to his league-leading 13th win against just four setbacks. Speaking of league leaders, Maniccia improved his CCHL-best statistics with a well taken hat trick and one assist. With 52 points following the game Maniccia is averaging two points per game. Colts had four powerplay opportunities only to have Bears pull the rug out from under them. Smiths Falls scored a very rare three shorthanded goals including one by Maniccia in the second, a first period strike by Karson McCartney and the third by Yannick Crete on a set-up from McCartney. Maniccia’s third goal, with 6:27 remaining, came during a Bears’ powerplay. Cornwall scoring leader Roman Ammirato was the only player to beat Martin. His goal came late in the opening stanza and left the teams deadlocked heading into the middle period. The visitors then scored four unanswered, two in each period, to win skating away. Jordan Piccolino was the losing goalie despite turning aside 33 shots.

Pembroke 5 – Ottawa 1: Lumber Kings moved back atop the Yzerman Division standings with a strong performance against Junior Senators at Jim Durrell Recreation Complex Wednesday. To underline how tight the division is, following play Wednesday Pembroke had 34 points while three other clubs, including Ottawa, were tied with 33. Kings dominated in this one, out gunning Sens 35-19 and holding period leads of 2-1 and 5-1. Ex-Lumber King Charlie Millen, who was seeking his third straight shutout going into the contest, was replaced for the third period by Alexandre Savard-Belanger who stopped all eight shots he faced. Pembroke spotted Ottawa the opening goal. Senators’ scoring leader Ben Robillard notched his 12th after only one minute, five seconds of play. Colin Bradbury with his second and Emilio Audi, with his first of two during a powerplay, replied for the visitors in the opening stanza. Right winger Timmy Moore connected for his first of the campaign four minutes into period two. Pembroke wrapped it up when Brendan McGuire and Audi (with his second) struck just 13 seconds apart in the late going. McGuire also assisted twice as did defenceman Carl-Philippe Ouimet. Ottawa was assessed seven of the game’s eight penalties. Audi, McGuire and centre Owen McDade completed a Pembroke sweep of the three star selection!

Nepean 6 – Kemptville 5 (OT): Raiders withstood a big third period comeback by visiting Kemptville Wednesday, winning on Keenan Hodgson’s second goal of the night and 11th of the campaign at 1:44 of overtime. Nepean led 1-0 after 20 minutes and they appeared to be on cruise control after adding four more unanswered goals in the second. To their credit the struggling 73’s refused to quit. They raced back into the game scoring four goals in 12 minutes. Then, with just 2:10 left in regulation 73’s scoring leader Lucas Gonu completed a third period hat trick to force OT. Kemptville was assisted by goalie Jacob Tugnutt who stopped all 13 shots he faced in the third period after replacing starter Billy Cooper. Kemptville carried the momentum into the extra period, outshooting the home team 4-2. Veteran net minder Matt Zawadzki stopped all four shots setting the stage for Hodgson’s winner. The single point was the first for Kemptville in five games but they remained mired in last place in the overall league standings. For Nepean it was Phillip Nasca scoring on a second period penalty shot and he also set up a pair. Raiders’ ace Dalen Hedges along with Andrew DeBrincat and Brent Norris had the others. Kemptville got a goal and an assist from Blaine Byron with Brett Varrin the other goal scorer. There were just seven minor penalties called, four of those to Nepean.

Smiths Falls 7 – Brockville 1: It was a frustrating Tuesday night for the struggling Braves who outshot host Smiths Falls and yet came out on the wrong end of a lopsided score. Bears rebounded from a Sunday loss in Carleton Place scoring two unanswered in the first, two more in the middle frame and they then added three without a reply in the final stanza. Jimmy Howe was excellent in Bears’ cage turning aside 27 Brockville scoring tries to improve his record to 6-4. League scoring leader Chris Maniccia padded his statistics with a goal and three assists to move to 48 points in 25 games. Following play Tuesday he was nine points ahead of Braves’ centre Ben Blasko who picked up an assist on defenceman Jay Kourkoulis’s first goal of the season. The powerplay strike late in the second period was the only puck to elude Howe. Karson McCartney led the Smiths Falls assault with two goals and one helper. Maniccia’s line mate Yannick Crete also scored twice giving him 12 goals and 34 points. Jesse Blais and blueliner Chris MacMillan, with his first of the campaign, were the other goal scorers. Matthew Jenkins was the losing net minder. The only major penalties came early in the third when Bears’ forward Adam Abu-Ali and Braves’ defenceman Kevin Kirisitis went toe-to-toe. Both were handed fighting majors, game misconducts and minor penalties. Abu-Ali was tagged as the aggressor.

Kanata 2 – Hawkesbury 1 (SO): The stampeding Stallions claimed their 16th win in 28 appearances, emerging with the bonus point after winning the shootout Tuesday. This was a goaltender’s dual with Kanata veteran Brandon Lane stopping 37 shots as the visitors held a 38-32 edge in scoring opportunities. At the other end Carmine Guerriero was also very sharp. Like Lane, he allowed just one goal in regulation, blocking 31 shots on the night. The first period was scoreless but early in the second light scoring Hawkesbury forward Jean-Pierre Larmoyeux triggered his third of the year during a powerplay. It remained 1-0 Hawks until the 12:31 mark of the final regulation period when Stallions’ scoring leader Derian Plouffe forced overtime with his 17th goal in 27 appearances. Plouffe was second in goals and fifth on the league scoring list following play Tuesday. The clubs skated through a scoreless extra period and in the shootout phase Devin Cobbold of Kanata was the only player to find the back of the net. Three Hawks’ shooters came up empty. There were 11 penalties called, six going to the home team.
Tuesday night three games will open this week’s CCHL schedule. Smiths Falls hosts Hawkesbury, Cumberland visits Carleton Place and Cornwall will travel to Kanata. Thirteen more games are slated Wednesday through Sunday.
